Governor Gavin Newsom just signed a new law called Assembly Bill 495, also known as the Family Preparedness Plan Act. The bill lets a wider range of relatives step in as caregivers for children if their parents are deported or detained by immigration authorities. Before this, only certain close family members could take care of kids in these cases. Now, the law allows any adult related by blβd, adoption, or family connection up to the fifth degree to temporarily care for a child. It also bans childcare centers and preschools from asking about immigration status and lets parents choose a temporary guardian through family court. Supporters say the law helps protect children from being sent to foster care when their parents are taken away. Critics argue it could give too much power to distant relatives or people with little connection to the child. The goal of the law is to make sure kids stay with family and donβt get separated during deportation situations. ππ¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦ #FooCommunity
