ICE agents chased down and detained a teacher at a preschool in Chicago early yesterday morning. The Spanish immersion preschool is called Rayito de Sol and has students ages 4 months to 6 years old. The NYT says “The school’s 14 classrooms are staffed by teachers from across Central and South America who parents say are highly qualified.” DHS said the woman they detained is Diana Santillana Galeano from Colombia.  Parents and young students watched as armed officers yanked Galeano into the parking lot while she yelled in Spanish that she had papers. Under Biden and Obama, schools and school grounds more generally were considered “sensitive locations,” meaning that agents couldn’t go there for the most part. Trump got rid of this policy in January, technically allowing agents to make arrests at schools, hospitals and churches. That being said, this is one of the first arrests at a school during Trump’s second term. Officials at the school apparently showed the agents the woman’s employment documents (with a work permit), but they detained her anyway.  DHS claims they did nothing wrong, but Democratic Rep. Delia C. Ramirez of Illinois says she’s trying to work with the day care to get the footage of what really happened released.  One parent said that she dropped her kid off at the school shortly after Galeano was taken away and “walked into a room of crying kids, crying parents and crying teachers…It was traumatizing.” Democratic Rep. Mike Quigley of Illinois said, “This is a violation of public trust and should send shivers down the spine of every parent.” Be sure to follow this account for more fact-based information like this.
